In response to Health Challenge Wales – the national focus for action to improve health and wellbeing in Wales – the Sports Council for Wales is calling on you to step up your walking levels and contribute to a turnaround in the health of the nation.

A report this month released by leading mental health charity Mind has even suggested that people experiencing mental health problems should be "prescribed" outdoor walks and taking part in conservation projects. in addition to or as an alternative to conventional therapies. The research has shown that such activities can have a beneficial effect on people’s health and wellbeing – especially in improving symptoms of depression and boosting self esteem.

Regular walking, like all aerobic exercise, can have a dramatic effect on your overall fitness, reducing the risk of a heart attack. Brisk walking increases the body’s demand for oxygen, making the heart, lungs and muscles work more efficiently. People who are fit and active have around half the risk of cardiovascular disease compared to those who are unfit and inactive.

From informal play and games on local green spaces, to adventure and orienteering routes in national forests, Wales has plenty to offer those wanting to get active in the great Welsh outdoors and experience that feel-good factor that comes from the sun on your skin and fresh air on your face.
