About Let's Walk Cymru

Lets Walk CymruThe use of the outdoors is a great way to be active. Wales has an abundance of natural green space, scenic landscapes and urban parks. The launch of 'Let's Walk Cymru' aims to get more people using these more often.

Building on the success of the Countryside Council for Wales' Walking the Way to Health (WW2H) programme, the new initiative aims to extend the traditional health walk programmes by providing opportunities from doorsteps to mountains. It is challenging groups to develop existing and create new walking-based programmes and to explore new and innovative ways of promoting walking to improve health and wellbeing.

Since 2003, over 22 walking projects have been established across Wales, with over 10,000 led walks, more than 18,000 participants joining these group-led walks and approximately 1,500 volunteer trained as walk leaders.

‘Let’s Walk Cymru’ has been developed to offer so much more than just the traditional health walks. This programme aims to promote a variety of walking activities that will encourage inactive people to participate in activity through a variety of different channels, be it Nordic walking, increasing the use of countryside footpaths, developing orienteering routes and improving navigation skills.

The Sports Council for Wales is on hand to support new and existing walking projects, provide advice and guidance on everything from training to insurance, monitoring, networking and evaluation and is responsible for the dissemination of grants to projects.
